HISTORIC ITEMS FROM GLEANNLOCH FARMS AND THE ESTATE OF DOUGLAS B. AND MARGARET CULLEN MARSHALL ACHIEVE RECORD-BREAKING RESULTS AT A BENEFIT AUCTION FOR THE PYRAMID SOCIETY
Lexington, KY (June 25, 2014) – Guests at The Egyptian Event in Lexington, Kentucky, were swept away by the energy, excitement, and nostalgia of two historic and record-breaking auctions held Friday, June 6th to benefit The Pyramid Society, an international breeders’ organization dedicated to the preservation and perpetuation of the Egyptian Arabian horse.
During its signature five-day celebration and horse show, billed annually as “the world’s largest showcase of the Egyptian Arabian horse,” The Pyramid Society has traditionally hosted silent and live benefit auctions featuring equine art generously donated from noted artists around the world.
This year, however, The Pyramid Society’s annual benefit auctions expanded in size and scope with two live auctions consisting solely of items from the legendary Las Palmas estate of Pyramid Society founding members and lifelong supporters Douglas B. and Margaret Cullen Marshall of Gleannloch Farms. The first auction took place Friday morning at the famed Fasig-Tipton equine auction facility, while the second was held Friday evening at the Embassy Suites Ballroom as part of a gala dinner and tribute to the Marshalls.
The 90 auction items consisted of Orientalist paintings, Islamic metal-work, antique bronzes, rare collectibles, and beautiful Egyptian and Bedouin hand-made tack. Every item sold, raising more than half a million dollars for The Pyramid Society. Bidders from a number of countries were represented online and on-site during the auctions.
Among the lots receiving international interest and the most spirited bidding were the original native halters of two famed Egyptian Arabian stallions, Nazeer and *Morafic. Together, these two museum-worthy artifacts sold for more than $275,000, and the price for the halter of Nazeer alone is likely the highest ever achieved for a 20th century horse halter. Both of these halters will now reside in Kuwait in the care of one very generous benefactor, Mohammed J. Al Marzouq, owner of Ajmal Arabian Stud. In addition to the record-breaking auctions, more than 100 items from Gleannloch Farms were also available for purchase at The Egyptian Event.
All of the historic items sold on Friday were donated by the Marshalls’ grandson, Dr. Doug Marshall, and his wife Dr. Amrita Ahuja, resulting in the single largest donation in The Pyramid Society’s history. The Society is grateful and honored by this historic donation which will ensure the continued success of the organization of which Douglas B. Marshall was a founder and first president. This gift will also further The Pyramid Society’s mission of preserving and promoting the Egyptian Arabian horses so beloved by Douglas and Margaret Marshall.
